“Offshore Wind Farm Marine Support”

“in·no·va·tion” /inəˈvāSH(ə)n/ noun; Innovation can be defined simply as a "new idea, device or method". However, innovation is often also viewed as the application of better solutions that meet new requirements, unarticulated needs, or existing market needs.

Our vision at SmithWind is to provide the most professional, safe and reliable vessels, personnel and management to the offshore wind farm industry.

Off the Southeastern shores of Massachusetts, and continuing both up and down the Eastern seaboard, Offshore Wind is rapidly developing as an exciting new endeavor and opportunity for developers, utility owner, and contractors alike. The demand for support during pre-construction, construction, and Operation & Maintenance (O&M) will be unprecedented with the regulations in place by the US Government requiring not only US Flag vessels, but US Labor as well. SmithWind is perfectly suited with current corporate structure, management team, company infrastructure and vast experience as a highly respected and LOCAL marine contractor and vessel operator.

Marine Mammal Detection

Smith Marine Inc. works with Oceaneering and SMRU Consulting to provide a platform for testing of Ocean PerceptionTM  Mammal Detection Equipment & Software

Smith Marine Inc. (SMI) has successfully completed a charter with Oceaneering International, Inc. and their Ocean PerceptionTM Marine Mammal Mitigation Software Solution project at Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary off the coast of Massachusetts.  SMI’s TOWLINE, a 65’ steel hull USCG Inspected Research Vessel, proved to be the ideal platform for the project, which consisted of outfitting the vessel with cameras and sensors integrated to an onboard control-center, in conjunction with deploying SMRU Consulting’s Undersea CAB Guardian System to detect and locate in real-time, mammalian presence and movements.  The system is designed to provide the Offshore Wind Industry with mammal detection and location data so that construction can be alerted to take mitigative actions to reduce negative impact on the mammalian populations, and to improve efficiencies in construction.

TOWLINE’s stern-mounted A-Frame, (rated at 5,000# WLL) in conjunction with the hydraulic winch (50,000# WLL) and ample electric service (twin 20 KW generators providing 120/240/450 VAC 60Hz) were well-suited to the tasks, and the air-conditioned main-deck workspace provided space for the demands of the Ocean Perception control center.

Ørsted South Fork

Smith Marine Inc. works with Inspire Environmental and Marine Imaging Systems to provide ROV survey/imagery for Ørsted’s South Fork Wind Farm

Smith Marine Inc. (SMI) has recently concluded an offshore charter with Inspire Environmental, in conjunction with Marine Imaging Systems, to provide Ørsted North America with undersea videography services for the Revolution Wind / South Fork Wind Farm project. The wind farm, located roughly 16 miles southeast of Rhode Island’s Block Island, is currently under construction with two of fifteen wind turbines in operation as of December 6th. The scope of the time charter was to provide an offshore-capable vessel suitable for 24 hour/day operation, and with the ability to remain on station up to 6 days.  The charter was estimated at two weeks in duration.

SMI’s Research Vessel TOWLINE was up to the challenge! To comply with Ørsted’s requirements for vessels working at the site, the Towline underwent a vigorous Safety Inspection, and came through with flying colors. The vessel was fitted with a Starlink system to allow for connectivity while offshore and out of cell phone range, and mobilization began at New Bedford on October 17th. After a brief delay while the scientific team received Ørsted-required firefighting training, and a brief October weather delay, the TOWLINE was on station and at work.  The project wrapped up on October 31st, after the survey team determined that the data gathered was sufficient for their purposes.

The charter confirmed the suitability of TOWLINE to handle long-duration, offshore assignments and the Ørsted Marine Inspection confirmed the vessels readiness to support Offshore Wind survey and other support services. The vessel remains ready to provide the platform necessary for your next successful survey or scientific charter.
